How is the Flesch-Kincaid reading level calculated?

The Flesch Reading Ease formula is: 206.835 − 1.015 × (words/sentences) − 84.6 × (syllables/words). Scores above 60 are considered easy to read; below 30 is very difficult (professional/academic level).

How are syllables counted?

Syllables are estimated using a vowel-group heuristic: each group of consecutive vowels counts as one syllable, with an adjustment for silent-e endings. The count is an approximation, not a dictionary lookup.

What counts as a stop word?

Common English function words such as 'the', 'a', 'is', 'in', 'of', 'and', 'to' are excluded from the top-10 word frequency list so that meaningful content words appear instead.

How is reading time estimated?

Reading time uses 238 words per minute (typical adult silent reading speed). Speaking time uses 130 words per minute (average conversational speech rate).
