Why is the Ping Test not a real ping?

Browsers cannot send ICMP echo requests, so it is not a true ping. The Ping Test times HTTP HEAD requests to the URL you enter and graphs the round-trip, which includes TCP/TLS overhead; the Network Latency Tester under Developer does the same against a fixed public CDN file and adds a rough download-speed estimate.
