How a typing test measures your speed

Typing speed is reported in words per minute (WPM), but a "word" in this context is a fixed unit: five characters, including spaces. This convention exists so that long and short real words are weighed fairly. This tool counts only your correct characters, divides by five to get words, and divides by elapsed time in minutes. The formula is WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ (seconds ÷ 60). Counting only correct characters is deliberate: it means you cannot inflate your score by mashing keys quickly, because wrong keystrokes earn no credit. The timer starts the instant you type your first character, not when the lesson loads, so thinking time before you begin is free.

Accuracy and errors are tracked separately

The tool shows two different correctness measures, and they answer different questions. Accuracy is the percentage of your current characters that match the target right now — if you fix a mistake, accuracy can recover. Errors is a running tally that increments every time you type a character that does not match, and it never goes down, even after you correct the slip. So accuracy tells you the state of your text; the error count tells you how many wrong keystrokes you made along the way. A high final accuracy with a high error count means you made mistakes but caught and fixed them — a sign to slow down slightly.

The six lessons, and why they are ordered that way

The lessons follow the classic touch-typing progression:

  • Home Row drills asdf jkl; — the keys your fingers rest on and return to.
  • Top Row and Bottom Row extend reaches up and down from home position.
  • Common Words builds real-world fluency with the most frequent English words.
  • Numbers & Symbols trains the row and combinations most people type slowest.
  • Custom Text lets you paste anything — a paragraph from your own work, code, or a passage you want to drill.

Working in this order builds muscle memory from the anchor keys outward, which is far more effective than practising random text from the start.

A worked example

Pick the Common Words lesson and type it cleanly in 30 seconds with the text being 75 characters long. Correct characters ÷ 5 gives 15 words; 30 seconds is half a minute, so 15 ÷ 0.5 = 30 WPM. Now imagine you mistyped 3 characters but fixed them all: your error count reads 3, yet because the final text matches, accuracy shows 100%. The same passage typed in 20 seconds with no errors would score 45 WPM — the visible payoff of fewer corrections, since every backspace-and-retype costs time the formula counts against you.

The live display and progress history

As you type, each character in the target text is coloured: green for correct, red for a mismatch, with a blinking cursor on the next character to press. A progress bar fills as you advance. When you finish, a summary records your WPM, accuracy, errors, and time, and saves the session to a history table stored in your browser. Watching that history is the real point — typing speed improves through repetition, and seeing last week's 35 WPM climb toward 50 is what keeps practice consistent.

Practical tips to actually get faster

  • Prioritise accuracy over speed at first. Errors cost you double — the wrong character earns nothing and the correction eats time. Slow down until you are near 98%+ accuracy, then let speed rise naturally.
  • Keep your fingers on the home row. Returning to asdf jkl; after every reach is the whole basis of touch typing; the home-row lesson trains exactly this.
  • Do not look at the keyboard. The on-screen colouring is your feedback; glancing down breaks the muscle memory you are building.
  • Practise in short, frequent sessions. Ten focused minutes daily beats an hour once a week — check the history trend, not a single score.
  • Use Custom Text to drill your real work. Paste the vocabulary, code syntax, or phrases you actually type so practice transfers directly to your day.

Privacy

Everything runs in your browser. Your typing, your scores, and your progress history are stored only on your device in local storage — nothing is uploaded, and the tool works fully offline. Clearing the history removes it permanently.
