How does the audio playback work?

Audio is generated using the Web Speech API built into modern browsers. When you click the speaker icon, the tool speaks the example English word using your browser's default speech synthesis voice. No network request is made.

Can I use the IPA symbols in my documents?

Yes — click any symbol to copy it to the clipboard as a Unicode character. IPA symbols are part of the Unicode standard and render correctly in most fonts and modern applications.

What is the difference between vowel height and backness?

Vowel height describes how high the tongue is in the mouth (close = high, open = low). Backness describes how far back the tongue is (front = near teeth, back = near throat). These two axes define the classic IPA vowel trapezoid.
