How this name generator builds a name
The generator works by random selection from curated word lists. You choose a gender (male, female, or any), a style (Common English, Classic, Fantasy, or Sci-Fi), and a count, and the tool pairs a randomly picked first name with a randomly picked surname from the matching lists. When you select "Any" gender, the tool flips a fair coin per name to decide male or female before drawing. Each name is therefore an independent, uniform random combination — every first name is equally likely, and every surname is equally likely, so repeats are possible but the space of combinations is large.
Because first names and surnames are drawn separately and then joined, a small number of source words produces a much larger number of full names. If a style has about 100 first names and 50 surnames, that is already 5,000 distinct full-name combinations before you even switch gender or style.
The four styles, and what each is for
| Style | Character | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Common English | Everyday names like James Smith or Emily Johnson | Realistic test data, placeholder users, contemporary characters |
| Classic | Old-fashioned names like Algernon Cavendish or Beatrice Pemberton | Period fiction, vintage branding, distinguished personas |
| Fantasy | Invented elvish/heroic names like Elarion Shadowmere | Tabletop RPGs, novels, game characters |
| Sci-Fi | Short, sharp names like Vex Nexus or Lyra Vector | Space settings, androids, futuristic call-signs |
The surname lists are style-matched too, so a fantasy first name is paired with a fantasy surname, keeping the full name internally consistent rather than mixing a medieval first name with a modern surname.
A worked example
Set gender to Any, style to Common English, and count to 5, then click Generate. The tool runs five times. For each, it flips a coin for gender, picks one first name from that gender's common list, picks one surname from the common surname list, and joins them with a space. You might get Robert Anderson, Olivia Martinez, David Lee, Sophia Walker, and Mark Turner. Click any single name to copy it, or use "Copy All" to grab the whole batch as newline-separated text.
Genuine use cases
- Realistic test data. Filling a database, form, or UI mockup with believable names is far better than
Test User 1for spotting layout bugs with long or short names. - Fiction and games. Authors and game masters need a quick supply of names that fit a setting's tone; the style presets do that instantly.
- Placeholder accounts and demos. Sales demos and screenshots look more convincing with natural-sounding sample users.
- Beating writer's block. Generating ten options and picking the one that "feels right" is faster than staring at a blank page.
Tips for getting better results
- Generate in batches. Request 10 or 20 and skim for the one that fits. Naming is subjective; a shortlist beats a single draw.
- Mix and match by hand. Nothing forces you to keep a pair. Take a first name from one result and a surname from another.
- Use style as a tone dial. If Common English feels too plain for a character, try Classic for gravitas or Sci-Fi for edge.
- Re-roll freely. Each click is a fresh independent draw, so generating again costs nothing.
An important caution about real people
These names are random combinations, not records of real individuals — but because the common lists use genuinely popular first names and surnames, a generated name will sometimes coincidentally match a real person. Treat the output as fictional placeholder data. Do not assume a generated name is unclaimed for a business, domain, or trademark, and do not use it to impersonate anyone. The generator runs entirely in your browser using built-in word lists, so no input is required and nothing is sent to a server; every name is created locally on your device.
