A fully browser-based memory matching game. Flip cards to reveal hidden symbols, then match each pair from memory. Choose from three grid sizes — 4×4 (8 pairs), 4×6 (12 pairs), or 6×6 (18 pairs) — and three card themes: emoji animals, emoji food, emoji sports, numbers, or letters. Cards are shuffled at the start of every game using the Fisher-Yates algorithm seeded from the Web Crypto API for true randomness. The game tracks your move count, matched pairs, and elapsed time. Personal best scores (fewest moves and fastest time per grid size) are saved to localStorage. Cards animate with a smooth CSS 3D flip on reveal. A victory screen appears when all pairs are matched, showing your final stats and best-score badge.

The classic concentration game, in your browser
This is the matching-pairs game — sometimes called Concentration or Pelmanism — where a grid of face-down cards hides pairs of identical symbols. You flip two at a time trying to find matches; matched pairs stay face up, mismatches flip back, and the goal is to clear the whole board in as few moves and as little time as possible. It's a genuine working-memory exercise dressed up as a quick game, and it runs entirely on your device with nothing to install.
Choosing your board: size and theme
Before you start, pick a grid size and a theme. The three sizes scale the challenge directly:

Five themes supply the card faces: Emoji Animals, Emoji Food, Emoji Sports, plain Numbers, and Letters. The theme is purely cosmetic for difficulty, but it matters for accessibility and for how you remember cards — many people find vivid emoji easier to fix in memory than abstract numbers, which can make the Numbers and Letters themes a slightly harder variant on the same grid.
How a turn works, and how the stats are counted
Click a card to flip it with a smooth 3-D rotation; click a second card and the game evaluates the pair. Here's the precise rule for the Moves counter: a move is counted each time you reveal a second card — that is, per pair of flips, whether or not it matches. So a perfect game of the 4×6 board (12 pairs) would take exactly 12 moves; in practice you'll take more as you hunt for partners. On a match, both cards lock face up and the Matched counter rises. On a mismatch the board briefly locks for one second so you can memorise the two symbols, then both cards flip back down. The Time clock starts the moment you flip your very first card — not when the board loads — so studying the layout beforehand costs you nothing.
A worked example: reading your score
Suppose you finish a 4×4 board (8 pairs) in 14 moves and 41 seconds. Fourteen moves against a theoretical minimum of eight means you made six "wasted" pairs of flips — a strong result that shows you were remembering most card positions after seeing them once. The game stores a personal best per grid size in your browser, and a result counts as a new best if it uses fewer moves, or the same moves in less time. So moves are the primary measure of skill and time is the tie-breaker, which rewards thoughtful recall over frantic clicking. Beat your record and a "New Best!" badge appears on the victory screen.
The shuffle is genuinely random
Each new game deals the cards using a Fisher–Yates shuffle seeded by the browser's cryptographic random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues) rather than the ordinary Math.random(). The practical upshot is that layouts are truly unpredictable — there's no subtle pattern a regular player could learn to exploit, so every deal is a fresh test. Your best scores and the game itself live only in this browser via localStorage; nothing is uploaded, and clearing your site data resets your records.
Strategy that actually lowers your move count
- Explore systematically. Early on, before you've seen many cards, flip new positions in a consistent order (say, left to right, top to bottom). Building an orderly mental map beats flipping randomly.
- Lead with a card you know. Once you've spotted a symbol's location, when you turn over its twin elsewhere, immediately flip back to the remembered spot rather than searching again.
- Use the one-second pause. On a mismatch the cards stay visible for a full second — actively note both symbols and their grid positions during that window instead of clicking ahead.
- Anchor with the corners and edges. Positions on the border are easier to fix in memory than ones lost in the middle of a 6×6 grid.
- Slow down to speed up. Because best scores rank on moves first, a deliberate player who remembers cards will beat a fast one who flips blindly.
Why it's worth playing
Beyond being a pleasant time-filler, matching games genuinely exercise visual short-term memory and concentration — you're holding a growing set of card-position associations in mind and updating them each turn. Stepping up from 4×4 to 6×6 roughly doubles the number of pairs you must track at once, giving you a clear way to progressively challenge yourself as your recall improves.
