What this calculator works out for you

A grade calculator answers three questions students actually ask: What's my grade right now? What letter and GPA does that translate to? And what do I need on the final to hit my target? This tool does all three. You add each course or assignment with its score and a weight, and it computes your overall percentage, the corresponding letter grade, a 4.0-scale GPA, and — separately — the exact score you must earn on remaining work to reach a goal. Every calculation updates the moment you change an entry.

Weighted versus simple average — the choice that changes your number

The most important setting is the mode, because it determines how your entries are combined:

  • Simple average adds up the scores and divides by the number of entries. Every entry counts equally, regardless of weight. Use this when each item is worth the same.
  • Weighted average multiplies each score by its weight, sums those, and divides by the total weight. This is how almost every real syllabus works — a final exam worth 40% of your grade should pull harder than a quiz worth 5%.

Here's why it matters. Suppose you score 90% on a 10%-weight quiz and 70% on a 90%-weight exam. A simple average says (90 + 70) ÷ 2 = 80%. A weighted average says (90×10 + 70×90) ÷ 100 = (900 + 6,300) ÷ 100 = 72%. That eight-point gap is the difference between a B and a C — and the weighted figure is the true one, because the exam dominates the grade. Choosing the wrong mode is the single most common way students miscalculate their standing.

How letter grades and GPA are derived

Once it has your overall percentage, the tool maps it to a letter using thresholds you can edit. The defaults follow the common US scale: A ≥ 90, B ≥ 80, C ≥ 70, D ≥ 60, and anything below 60 is an F. If your school uses a different cutoff — say A starts at 93 — open the Grade Thresholds panel and change the numbers; every letter and GPA figure recalculates instantly.

For GPA, each entry's letter grade is converted to grade points on the 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0), multiplied by its weight (treated as credit hours), summed, and divided by total credits. This mirrors how a real transcript GPA is computed: a 4-credit A and a 1-credit C don't count equally.

The "What Do I Need?" calculator

This is the feature students reach for before a final. You give it four numbers — your current grade, the weight that grade represents, the weight still remaining, and your target final grade — and it solves for the score you need. The formula is:

needed = (target × totalWeight − current × currentWeight) / remainingWeight

Worked example: you have 78% going into the final, that 78% covers 80% of the course, the final is the remaining 20%, and you want an 85% overall. Plug in: needed = (85 × 100 − 78 × 80) ÷ 20 = (8,500 − 6,240) ÷ 20 = 2,260 ÷ 20 = 113%. The tool flags this in red because a score above 100% isn't achievable — an honest warning that an A is out of reach this term. Lower your target to 80% and it returns a needed score of 88%, which is a realistic goal. If your target is already locked in regardless of the final, it tells you that too.

Real use cases

  • Mid-semester check-ins. Enter graded assignments with their syllabus weights to see your true standing before it's too late to act.
  • Final-exam planning. Use "What Do I Need?" to set a concrete, realistic target score for the last exam.
  • Comparing scenarios. Adjust a hypothetical score and watch the letter grade flip, so you can see exactly where the cutoffs bite.
  • GPA estimates. Treat each course as an entry with its credit hours as the weight to project a term GPA.

Common mistakes

  • Mismatched weights. In weighted mode the weights should reflect your syllabus. Mixing "percent of grade" for some entries and "credit hours" for others corrupts the average — keep one consistent unit.
  • Wrong thresholds. Schools differ. If your A starts at 93 or you have plus/minus grades, set the thresholds to match before trusting the letter and GPA.
  • Confusing the two averages. If your overall number looks too rosy, you may be in simple mode while your course is weighted. Check the toggle first.
  • Ignoring an impossible target. When "What Do I Need?" returns a figure over 100%, the goal genuinely can't be met from remaining work alone — adjust the target rather than the math.
