Counting an age is trickier than it looks
"How old am I?" sounds like simple subtraction, but calendars make it messy: months have different lengths, leap years add a day, and the answer depends on whether today's date has already passed this year's birthday. This tool does the calendar arithmetic correctly and then layers on the fun parts — a live countdown to your next birthday, the day of the week you were born, your zodiac sign, your birthstone, and a curated list of famous people who share your date. Enter a date of birth and everything updates at once; leave the page open and it re-checks every minute, so a countdown ticking toward midnight rolls over on its own.
How the age calculation works
The tool computes age in years, months, and days by subtracting the birth date from today field by field, then borrowing when a field goes negative — exactly how you'd subtract by hand. It starts with the day difference; if today's day-of-month is earlier than your birth day-of-month, it borrows a month and adds back the number of days in the previous calendar month (which is why a January calculation correctly borrows 31 days from December, not a flat 30). If the month difference then goes negative, it borrows a year. This per-field borrowing is what makes the result match how people actually state ages, rather than just dividing total days by 365.25.
A worked example
Suppose someone was born on 14 March 1990 and today is 1 June 2026. The day field (1 minus 14) goes negative, so the tool borrows a month and adds May's 31 days, giving 18 days. The month field, now reduced by that borrow, lands on 2 months. The year field comes out to 36. So the age reads 36 years, 2 months, 18 days. Separately, the next-birthday logic builds a 14 March date in the current year; since that already passed, it rolls forward to 14 March 2027 and reports the day count remaining. The day-of-week panel reconstructs the original 1990 date and tells you it was a Wednesday.

The famous-people list is deliberately curated rather than pulled from a live database, so it only covers a selection of dates; if your day isn't in the set, the tool says so warmly instead of inventing names. And on the day itself, the banner switches to a "Happy Birthday" message and a confetti animation drawn on a canvas overlay.
Genuine use cases
- Planning around a milestone. See precisely how many days until a 30th, 40th, or 50th so you can book the party with enough lead time.

Common mistakes and points of confusion
- Reading age as a decimal. The three numbers are years, months, and days combined, not separate totals — you are not 36 years and also 2 whole months on top of a full year.
- Leap-day birthdays. A 29 February birthday has no anniversary in common years; the next-birthday count will target the date your browser's calendar resolves, so expect it to land on the surrounding days in non-leap years.
- Time zones at midnight. The countdown uses your device's local date. Around midnight, a birthday will flip when your clock crosses, which may differ from a friend in another time zone.
- Zodiac cusp dates. The sign boundaries are fixed calendar cutoffs; people born within a day of a boundary sometimes see a different sign from astrology sites that shift cusps year to year.
Privacy
Your date of birth and name never leave the page. All calculations run in your browser using its built-in date functions, and the confetti is drawn locally on a canvas — there is no server call, no logging, and the tool works with the internet switched off.
