Two questions this calculator answers
Most savings questions come in one of two shapes, and this tool handles both. The first tab — How long to reach goal? — takes a target amount, what you've already saved, your monthly contribution, and an interest rate, then tells you how many months and years it will take to get there. The second tab — How much do I need monthly? — flips the problem: you fix a deadline, and it solves for the monthly contribution required to hit your target on time. Both run a real month-by-month simulation with compound interest, so the answers reflect how money actually grows, not a rough estimate.
How the math works
The forward calculator steps through one month at a time. Each month it adds your contribution, then credits interest on the running balance at the monthly rate — your annual percentage divided by twelve. So a 5% annual rate becomes roughly 0.4167% per month. The loop continues until the balance reaches your target, counting the months and tallying total contributions versus total interest earned along the way. This is genuine monthly compounding: interest earned in month three itself earns interest in month four.
The reverse calculator uses the standard annuity (PMT) formula rather than guessing. Given a future value, a present value, a monthly rate r, and a number of months n, it solves for the payment that makes the numbers balance, accounting for the growth your existing savings and each contribution will earn before the deadline. When the interest rate is zero it simplifies to plain division — the shortfall split evenly across the months.
A worked example
Suppose you want $50,000, already have $5,000, can save $500 a month, and earn 5% annually. The forward tab simulates month by month: month one adds $500 plus about $20.83 of interest on your $5,000, reaching $5,520.83; the balance snowballs from there. The result lands at roughly 6 years 8 months. Crucially, the tool splits the outcome into your total contributions versus the interest earned — and you'll see that a meaningful chunk of that $50,000 came from compounding, not from your own deposits. The projection table shows the first twelve months plus the final month so you can trace the curve, and an area chart plots the balance against a dashed "Goal" line.
Now switch to the reverse tab with the same $50,000 target, $0 saved, a 36-month deadline, and 5% interest. The PMT formula returns about $1,289/month — noticeably less than the naive $50,000 ÷ 36 = $1,389, because the interest your deposits earn does part of the work.
Practical use cases
- Emergency fund. Set the target to three to six months of expenses and see whether your current pace gets you there within a year.
- House down payment. Use the reverse tab: fix the date you want to buy and learn the monthly number that makes it happen.
- A car, wedding, or holiday. Compare scenarios by nudging the contribution up and watching the timeline shrink.
- Comparing a high-yield account. Run the same goal at 0.5% versus 4.5% interest to see, in months saved, what a better account is worth.
Tips for realistic results
- Use a conservative interest rate. A high-yield savings account might pay 4–5% today, but rates move. For a multi-year goal, modeling a lower rate builds in a margin of safety.
- Enter your real current savings. Seeding the calculation with what you already have dramatically shortens the timeline, and it's the input people most often leave at zero by habit.
- Test the trade-off. Run the forward tab twice — once at your comfortable contribution, once $100 higher. The difference in months is often larger than the extra effort feels.
Common mistakes
- Confusing the annual and monthly rate. Enter the annual percentage; the tool divides by twelve internally. Typing the monthly rate by mistake will overstate your growth twelvefold.
- Expecting savings rates to equal investment returns. This calculator models steady compound interest, which suits a savings account or CD. Stock-market returns are volatile and averaged, so don't plug a 10% "market return" into a short-term savings plan.
- Ignoring inflation. A fixed dollar goal loses buying power over long horizons. For a goal many years out, consider setting a slightly higher target.
- Forgetting deposits aren't automatic. The simulation assumes you contribute the same amount every single month. Skipped months push the date out — automating the transfer is the simplest way to keep the projection honest.
